Recently，The leading global aluminum producer, United Company Rusal (UC RUSAL) has
announced the operating results for the fourth quarter of 2017 and for the full year
2017.For the full year 2017, Rusal’s aluminum production totaled 3.707 million tonnes,
marginally higher by 0.6% when compared with 2016. Among them, aluminum production totaled
944,000 tonnes in Q4 2017, higher by 1.4% over the quarter prior to that.
During the last quarter of 2017, Rusal’s alumina production increased marginally by 1.3%
to total 1.99 million tonnes. Russian operations accounted for nearly 36% of the total
output. The full year production totaled 7.773 million tonnes, higher by 3.3% when
compared with 2016.The increase was mainly due to the continued production of the Russian
Urals alumina refinery and Ukraine's Nikolaev refinery at the beginning of 2017.However,
the yearly bauxite output has dropped by 4.4% to total 11.645 million tonnes. Meantime,
the bauxite production during Q4 ’17 witnessed a jump of over 7% over the previous
quarter to total 2.945 million tonnes.
In Q4, aluminum sales registered 3.3% jump over the quarter to total around 1 million
tonnes. During the year were up by nearly 4% at 3.955 million tones.
Rusal's aluminum report, the global economy showed strong growth in 2017, with
manufacturing activity growing in most major economies and consumer confidence at a high
level. According to Rusal's aluminum estimate, China's aluminium demand grew 7.8 percent
in 2017 to 34.9 million tonnes in 2017, with demand excluding China rising 3.7 percent to
29.2 million tonnes. In terms of supply, the Rusal's aluminum believes that China's
aluminum industry will reduce illegal production capacity and projects by more than 10
million tons in 2017.
Rusal's aluminum estimates that winter cutting production capacity will lead to the loss
of metal of about 1 million tons and 4.4 million tons of alumina, including anode, carbon
materials such as coking coal supply may lead to more losses, due to raw material price
increase, may constitute a upward pressure on cost base for aluminum manufacturers; In
addition, China in energy intensive industry will continue to implement strong anti-
pollution measures and environmental measures, will make the production cost of China's
aluminium smelters increase 70 yuan to 70 yuan/ton since this year, because pay the
